DNS controls where a domain points for websites, email and other services. A small change can affect an entire service, so record the existing value before editing anything.
Open the Zone Editor
- Open Zone Editor in cPanel.
- Find the domain and choose Manage.
- Locate the exact record you intend to change.
- Copy the current value somewhere safe before editing it.
- Make the requested change and save it.
Common record types
- A records point a hostname to an IPv4 address.
- CNAME records point one hostname to another hostname.
- MX records control where incoming email is delivered.
- TXT records are commonly used for SPF, DKIM, DMARC and service verification.
Know where DNS is actually hosted
The Zone Editor only controls live DNS when the domain is using that server as an authoritative DNS provider. If DNS is hosted elsewhere, a change in cPanel may have no public effect. Check the nameservers first if you are uncertain.
When to ask before changing anything
If the change involves MX records, nameservers, an existing SPF record, DKIM, DMARC or a service you do not recognize, send the requested change to support. It is much easier to check a DNS instruction before an outage than to reconstruct the previous records afterward.
Need help? If you are a Mumford Connect client and would rather not make the change yourself, use the Support page and include the affected domain or email address.
