The safest way to configure a mail application is to use the settings shown for the actual mailbox in cPanel. Do not copy server names from another domain or an old setup guide.
Find the mail settings
- Open Email Accounts in cPanel.
- Find the mailbox and choose Connect Devices.
- Use the secure incoming and outgoing settings shown under Manual Settings.
- Use the full email address as the username for both incoming and outgoing mail.
Use IMAP in most cases
IMAP keeps mail and folders synchronized with the server, which is normally the best choice when the same mailbox is used on more than one device. POP downloads mail to a device and can make it harder to keep several devices consistent.
Authentication matters
- Incoming mail should use the secure IMAP settings shown in cPanel.
- Outgoing mail should use SMTP authentication.
- Use the same full email address and mailbox password unless the Connect Devices screen says otherwise.
- If a mail application offers to configure the account automatically, check the result against the cPanel settings before assuming it is correct.
After changing a password
Update the saved password on every device. A forgotten phone, tablet or old computer can keep submitting the old password in the background and trigger security blocks.
