THE CHALLENGE
What needed to change
Lunenburg Regional Fire & Emergency Services needed to replace an ageing website with a more modern, manageable platform that could serve both the public and its member fire departments.
The site contains a broad range of information, including regional fire-service resources, department information, forms, documents and material intended specifically for members.
The challenge was to organize this information clearly while making routine updates easier for administrators. Some resources also needed to remain restricted to authorized users rather than being publicly accessible.
Existing documents and established links also had to be handled carefully during the transition so that the move to a new platform did not unnecessarily disrupt resources already being used by member departments.
THE APPROACH
How we approached it
The site was rebuilt in WordPress to provide LRFES with a more straightforward way to manage content without requiring technical knowledge for routine updates.
The information architecture was simplified around the tasks visitors are most likely to perform, including finding a fire department, accessing resources, checking current information and learning more about LRFES.
A dedicated fire department directory brings regional departments together in a consistent format while still allowing individual departments to maintain their own separate websites and identities.
The site was also designed responsively so that information remains practical to access on phones and tablets, particularly for users looking up contact details, documents or other resources away from a desktop computer.
CUSTOM DEVELOPMENT
Built for the requirement
Custom functionality was developed to support protected member resources and documents that should not be available to the general public.
The migration also required careful handling of existing PDF and document resources so established file URLs could be preserved where necessary rather than forcing users to update existing references and bookmarks.
The WordPress implementation was kept focused on LRFES's actual requirements, combining standard content management with purpose-built functionality where additional control was needed.
THE OUTCOME
The result
LRFES now has a responsive, maintainable website that provides a single online resource for the organization, its member departments and the public.
Administrators can manage routine website content through WordPress, while member-only information can remain separate from public material.
Fire department information and frequently used resources are easier to organize and maintain, and existing document links were retained where required during the transition.
The project replaced an ageing website platform with a more practical foundation that LRFES can continue to maintain and expand as its requirements change.
