THE CHALLENGE
What needed to change
St. John’s Anglican Church needed a website that could serve several very different audiences without becoming difficult to navigate.
For parishioners, the site needed to provide practical, frequently updated information such as worship times, weekly bulletins, news and upcoming events.
For visitors, St. John’s is also an important historic site in Lunenburg, so the website needed to present its history, architecture and self-guided visitor information clearly and in considerably more depth.
The existing content therefore had to support both the day-to-day needs of an active church and the expectations of people visiting the site for heritage and tourism information.
Just as importantly, staff needed to be able to keep the site current without relying on a developer for routine updates.
THE APPROACH
How we approached it
The site was rebuilt in WordPress and organized around the information visitors are most likely to look for rather than around the internal structure of the church.
Current information such as worship, events, bulletins and news is kept easy to find, while the church’s extensive historical material is grouped into dedicated heritage and visitor sections.
Particular attention was given to making the large amount of content manageable on smaller screens. Navigation, event information, galleries and content layouts adapt for phones and tablets rather than simply shrinking the desktop presentation.
The design also gives the historic character of St. John’s appropriate prominence without making the site feel dated or overly formal. The result is intended to work equally well as a practical parish website and as an introduction for people planning a visit.
CUSTOM DEVELOPMENT
Built for the requirement
A custom WordPress calendar is used to manage and display church services, concerts, choir activities, community events and other scheduled activities.
Keeping the calendar within WordPress allows events to remain closely integrated with the rest of the website rather than depending on a separate third-party service.
The site also includes tailored gallery and content layouts for the church’s heritage material and self-guided tour, helping a large amount of historical information remain usable across desktop and mobile devices.
These elements have been maintained and refined as the site’s requirements have evolved.
THE OUTCOME
The result
St. John’s now has a single website that supports its role as an active parish, community organization and historic destination.
Parishioners can access current information, events and weekly material in one place, while visitors can explore the history of the church and plan a visit without those two types of content competing with one another.
WordPress gives administrators a straightforward way to maintain day-to-day content, and the custom calendar keeps regularly changing event information within the same system.
The result is a more practical, maintainable website that presents both the present-day life and the long history of St. John’s clearly.
