What to Do When a Mailbox Is Full

Check mailbox storage, find the folders using space and avoid deleting the wrong data.

When a mailbox reaches its quota it may stop accepting new mail. The quickest fix is to confirm where the space is being used before deleting anything.

Check the mailbox usage

  1. Open Email Accounts in cPanel.
  2. Find the affected mailbox and check its storage usage.
  3. If it is at or near the limit, open Webmail and review the largest folders.

Folders people often miss

  • Sent mail
  • Trash or Deleted Items
  • Junk or Spam
  • Folders containing large attachments
  • Old mail copied into archive folders that are still stored on the server

If the whole hosting account is short of space

Open Disk Usage in cPanel. Mailboxes, old backup files, logs and website files all contribute to account storage. Do not remove unfamiliar files simply because they are large. If you are unsure what can safely be deleted, contact support.
